Authorities thank amateur fisherman for rescuing turtle (with video)

Turtle

The fisheries department on Monday thanked amateur fisherman Valantis Christofi for rescuing a Green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) recently that was found in the Liopetri sea area tangled in a fishing net.

Christofi posted a video last Saturday in which he is seen cutting fishing net off of a turtle.

“This is the duty of amateur fishermen towards the sea,” he said in his post.

“Such voluntary actions should be highlighted and set an example for us all,” the fisheries department said on Monday.

It also recalled that it operates the sea turtle rescue centre at the Cyprus Marine Aquaculture Research Centre (CyMARC) in Meneou, Larnaca and it also collaborates with the Ocean Aquarium in Protaras for the treatment of injured and sick sea turtles.

It called on members of the public, in cases of locating injured sea turtles, to seek help from CyMARC or the Ocean Aquarium.
