Many of the season’s annual events have been put on hold as Covid-19 cases increase and a big question mark hangs around December’s Christmas markets yet there is one event that aims to take place – should the epidemiological conditions improve. The Nicosia Pop Up Festival, which takes place every December on Makarios Avenue with dozens of small business taking over festive wooden huts is set to return this year.

Organisers the Nicosia Municipality and the Nicosia Municipal Arts Centre, Associated with the Pierides Foundation [NiMAC], have extended an open call for proposals to take over vacant shops and the organisation of events in City Plaza and Theatro Polis – OPAP between December 7 and 31. The objective of the festival, which has been identified as best practice at European level, is to gather in the commercial centre of Nicosia whatever innovative, inventive and creative talent exists in the fields of entrepreneurship, entertainment, culture and education.

“Through the organisation of the festival,” organisers said, “we aim at the revitalisation and revival of the capital’s commercial centre by boosting entrepreneurship, either through commercial activity or through innovation, and the emergence of new talents through creation.” The project will be accompanied by a range of parallel activities – educational, cultural, recreational – focusing on the active participation of the public, adhering to the relevant protocols to limit the spread of Covid-19.

The proposals will concern the following areas: innovative ideas from new companies (start-ups), commerce proposals by professionals or young entrepreneurs and artists in relation to retail trade, art proposals relating to arts and culture (art exhibitions, installations, theatre, music, performances, dance) and proposals of educational interest (workshops, courses, lectures and other related activities), which will be held in appropriate predefined spaces.

Proposals should be submitted to the organiser’s offices on the corner of Tempon and Pentadaktylos Streets in the Old Town (Monday to Friday 8.30am-2.30pm) by Friday, November 13 or in electronic form to [email protected] writing as Subject: Declaration of Interest for Nicosia Pop Up Festival 2020 (please note that the file should not exceed 7MB) by Sunday, November 15.
