Man remanded after fatal stabbing in old Nicosia

A 26-year-old man from India was remanded on Saturday for eight days in connection with the fatal stabbing of a 28-year-old man from Pakistan on Friday evening in Nicosia.

The incident took place late on Friday with police alerted just after midnight of an injured person on Salaminos street in the old part of Nicosia.

Officers found there a 28-year-old man lying on the pavement and another man, 24, with injuries. The 28-year-old was pronounced dead.

State pathologists Sofoklis Sofokleous, Angeliki Pappeta and Orthodoxos Orthodoxou examined the scene.

The 24-year-old was taken to hospital where he had his wounds treated and discharged.

A 26-year-old Indian man, believed to be linked to the case, was arrested on Saturday.

The three men were reportedly flatmates and the suspect had rowed with the victim over financial differences. The victim owed the suspect €35.

According to reports, the suspect stabbed his 28-year-old flatmate in the chest and abdomen.

The 24-year-old had tried to calm them down but was slightly injured during the scuffle.

Police chief Stelios Papatheodorou, in a tweet, congratulated the officers of the Nicosia police for promptly arresting the suspect.
