The Οpen University of Cyprus’ (OUC) development plans, the new prospects of distance education and the autonomous operation of the university were discussed thoroughly on November 10 in a meeting between the university’s leadership and the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth, Prodromos Prodromou.

During the meeting, the chairman of the council of the university, Charalambos Prountzos, and the university’s rector, professor Petros Pashiardis, had the opportunity to inform the minister about the university’s main achievements, highlighting the fact that the OUC in just 15 years of academic operation has succeeded to establish its presence in the Greek-speaking arena of higher education.

They had the opportunity to discuss issues such as quality assurance in higher education, OUC’s funding and the challenges faced not only by the Open University of Cyprus but other universities in Cyprus due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. Furthermore, given the fact that the OUC is a public university and the only one in Cyprus devoted exclusively to distance education, the university’s leadership and Prodromou discussed the coordinating role that the OUC  may assume in distance higher education on the island, as well as the know-how, expertise and e-learning infrastructure it can provide to the education ministry, to support its aspirations to utilise e-learning tools and methods at all levels of education.
