Police on Tuesday had to dispatch members of the riot unit at a migrant reception centre in Kofinou after a number of individuals who tested positive for coronavirus reacted violently and refused to be transferred elsewhere to prevent its spread.

The trouble started at noon when a number of migrants who tested positive for the virus refused to be transferred to a facility in Larnaca to be quarantined.

Reports said the fracas involved 16 migrants who reacted to being moved, forcing the centre’s administration to call for backup.

The situation calmed down later in the afternoon and after the intervention of police reinforcements.

Police said they expected to transfer the migrants to Eden later Tuesday.
