Coronavirus: Migrants moved out of reception centre after testing positive

Following a fracas all 16 migrants at the Kofinou migrant reception centre who tested positive for the coronavirus on Tuesday were moved to other facilities, police said on Wednesday.

According to police, shortly after 6.30pm on Tuesday, 12 of them were taken by bus to the Eden rehabilitation centre in Tersefanou, Larnaca, while four refused to be moved.

In the presence of a strong riot police force, they broke several objects, some armed with sharp objects such as knives.

At one point, one of them reportedly attempted to assault a police officer with a knife but did not manage to injure him after another officer intervened.

He was arrested but later released and transferred to Tersefanou.

Another one of the four was also taken to the rehabilitation centre in the evening while the other two were driven to Famagusta hospital late at night.
