Prisoners get early release as part of RoC 60th anniversary

Fourteen prisoners have been released early following a reduction of their sentence to mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of the Republic of Cyprus, the Central Prisons announced on Wednesday.

In a statement, the prisons said President Nicos Anastasiades had reduced the sentences of 143 prisoners – 72 Cypriots and 71 foreigners — by a quarter, resulting in the immediate release of 14, nine of whom are foreign nationals.

According to the criteria, prisoners doing time for murder, attempted murder, manslaughter, drugs trafficking, sexual offences, and offences against children, were exempted.

Also exempted are prisoners whose sentence the attorney-general has appealed, as well as those who had their time reduced previously.

Early release has a positive effect on prisoners and society and contribute to a smoother reintegration and connection with society, and to their reform, the Prisons said.

They also help decongest the facility, especially under the current difficult conditions created by the pandemic.
