Farmers’ union rails against overuse of pesticides

Cyprus farmers’ union (Panagrotikos) on Thursday condemned the unregulated use of pesticides found in local fruits and vegetables.

In a written statement, the union asked for the exemplary punishment of the “unscrupulous farmers” who failed to comply with all the rules of protection and hygiene regarding the use of pesticides.

“We call on farmers to be more careful in the use of pesticides and to comply with all measures, terms and conditions required after any use of pesticides, but also to comply with the instructions of the ministry of agriculture,” the announcement said.

The union also called on the ministry to take all measures and to perform more intensive checks on agricultural products, so as not to “endanger the health of consumers”.
