Coronavirus: five Athalassa patients and three staff come up positive in rapid tests

The current Athalassa hospital

Eight people, five patients and three nurses, have tested positive for Covid-19 at the Athalassa psychiatric hospital, sources within the hospital told the Cyprus Mail on Tuesday.

The positive results came from rapid tests and must be confirmed by PCR.

Testing took place after a patient who arrived from the central Nicosia prisons tested positive in a second test late on Monday.

The patient had initially tested negative for the virus.

The ward was disinfected and all the staff and patients in the ward were given rapid tests.

Five patients and three nurses tested positive with. All eight have undergone PCR tests and are expecting the results.

All were asymptomatic. The three employees were sent to self-isolate at home.

The five patients are isolating in a ward, which was not approved by the hospital’s infection team as a proper ward for Covid-19 patients has not been prepared yet.

Another female patient tested positive at the psychiatric hospital last week. She was later sent home after the hospital’s infection committee checked the facilities where she was isolating and found them unsuitable.

The patient returned to the hospital this week as she was in need of urgent psychiatric treatment.
