Detainee sets bedding on fire

A 38-year-old who lit a fire in his holding cell at the Polis Chrysochous station is facing charges for arson, malicious damage and threatening violence.

According to the police, the man protested against the conditions under which he was being held and threatened to light a fire. He consequently set his mattress and sheets ablaze.

A police officer at the premises acted quickly and extinguished the flames, while an ambulance was called to the scene as precautionary measure.

While the damage to the building is understood to be serious, no injuries were reported.

The detainee is serving a multi-year sentence and was being held at the Polis station.
