Kitchens have no borders: online cook-along

Restaurants are closed again and we’re back to spending more time at home and even more time in the kitchen. Will the lockdown bread trend return? Perhaps but to make this time in the kitchen more fun, adventurous an online cook-along event by Border Kitchen will take place on Sunday and you can join from straight from your kitchen.

Food brings people together. Especially good food and in Cyprus we know that well. It’s exactly what Niki Psarias wants to do with Border Kitchen. A local dining concept that started in 2017 bringing islanders from all communities to the table to eat delicious food and to spark dialogue. With a team of Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot chefs they hold events cooking up tasty Mediterranean dishes.

This year holding communal dinners has been a little bit trickier with the pandemic restrictions. So, Niki is joining Chef and Gastronomy lecturer Munevver Gurel for a free online cooking session that anyone can join. The workshop, held on Zoom, won’t be a normal cooking class though.

Munevver will lead a session from where she is, showing participants how to make delicious Cypriot vegetarian meatballs and two types of hummus. Niki, who says she is definitely not a chef, will be following from her home using only verbal instructions from Munevver. Participants will be able to watch them video-cook side by side, and better yet, join in too following Munevver’s video instructions.

When signing up to Sunday’s 6pm workshop, participants will receive a recipe pack to gather all the ingredients they will need in advance for a virtual workshop of cooking together beyond restrictions, curfews and borders because as Niki says “the kitchen has no borders”.
