Arrest after brawl over state budget (Update 1)

A 35-year-old suspected of injuring another man during a fight over the 2021 state budget was arrested on Thursday around noon, police confirmed.

Authorities were on the lookout for him after leaving the victim, a 36-year-old in serious condition following the fight, which took place at 7.30pm Wednesday.

The 36-year-old allegedly disagreed with the suspect about far-right Elam’s stance on the budget during a Facebook discussion.

The two arranged to meet in Kolossi, Limassol to discuss their differences.

They both arrived with their friends at an open space but the discussion soon turned into a brawl.

Afterwards, the 36-year-old had to be immediately taken to Limassol general hospital where he was diagnosed with multiple head injuries and amnesia. His injuries are not life threatening, according to the police.

The 35-year-old, a resident of Limassol, will have answer to accusations in front of the Limassol criminal court later on Thursday.
