Four more elderly people living in nursing homes died this month of coronavirus, the health ministry said on Monday.

According to the ministry, it emerged that the cause of death of four more people, who died in December not in hospital but in nursing homes, was Covid-19.

A man aged 86 and a 100-year-old woman both died on December 2 at Klimention nursing home in Nicosia. The other two deaths concern a 90-year-old woman who died on December 13 and a 78-year-old man, who died a day later, both at Hrisi Ilikia nursing home, also in the Nicosia district.

This brings the number of people who died from coronavirus to 95; 61 men and 34 women. The average age of people who died from coronavirus is now 79 years.

The ministry explained that the death certificates of these four people, who were not hospitalised but had remained in the nursing homes, were sent to the health monitoring unit.

“According to the coding of death certificates through the IRIS software system, the final cause of death of the four individuals is attributed to the Covid-19 disease,” the ministry said.

These four people had remained at the nursing homes because it was deemed they did not need hospital treatment, the health ministry said. Their death certificates were sent to the health monitoring unit as part of checks carried out in nursing homes.

‘Iris’ is an automated system for coding multiple causes of death and for determining the underlying (final) cause of death.
