Nicosia general hospital

Nicosia General Hospital’s surgical ward has temporarily closed after more than 10 positive coronavirus cases were detected.

The unit has been disinfected in line with health protocols and amid a surge in hospital admissions of coronavirus patients may be used as a Covid-19 clinic, Charalambos Harilaou, spokesman of the state health organization Okypi told CyBC on Thursday.

The number of hospitalised coronavirus patients rose to 146 on Wednesday. Harilaou described the situation at state hospitals as ‘difficult’ and said the number of coronavirus patients is expected to rise further.

The coronavirus outbreak at the surgical ward affects doctors, nurses and patients. A number of other members of the staff are quarantining and efforts are underway to find replacement staff.
