Cypriots about average in Europe on alcohol spending

Alcohol Spending

In 2019 households in Cyprus spent 1.6 per cent of their total consumption expenditure on alcoholic beverages, roughly the same as the EU average and both Bulgaria and Slovenia, Eurostat reported on New Year’s Eve.

This does not include alcoholic beverages paid for in restaurants and hotels, the statistical service noted.

Among EU member states, the share of total consumption expenditure spent on alcoholic beverages was the highest in three Baltic states: Latvia, with 4.8 per cent, Estonia (4.7 per cent) and Lithuania (3.7 per cent).

In contrast, the figure was below 1 per cent in Greece and Italy (each 0.9 per cent).

Between 2009 and 2019, the share of total household expenditure on alcohol decreased in 13 EU countries with available data.

In seven member states, the expenditure increased while it remained stable in six of the countries.
