Billions of water bottles are recycled and turned into polyester each year. American outdoor clothing giant Patagonia pioneered this process in 1993, which has since gained widespread popularity with other brands, such as Nike and Ralph Lauren.

This means today’s consumers now have more environmentally-friendly options when it comes to new purchases, but are there other hidden costs to the environment?
