Police remand suspect in Christmas Eve bomb blast (updated)

A 35-year-old man arrested on Friday in connection with a Christmas Eve bomb explosion at a residence in the district of Famagusta was remanded into police custody for six days on Saturday.

The man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, police said.

The blast on December 24, took place at around 9.10am. The device had been placed in the front yard of a newly constructed house that belongs to a 50-year-old man.

The owner was in the yard at the time of the explosion, together with another man, 34, but neither was injured by the blast.

The bomb squad said the blast was caused by a high explosive device placed in the yard.

The suspect was arrested on Friday evening.
