President Nicos Anastasiades will meet today the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Cyprus, Jane Holl Lute in the context of preparations for an informal 5+1 meeting on the Cyprus issue.

The meeting is set to take place at 10:30am at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia.

According to Government sources, Lute will begin exploring during the meeting with President Anastasiades and the meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader (14:30am today), whether she can start building the result that possibly could come out from an informal 5+1 meeting.

The President of the Republic of Cyprus has recently sent a letter to UN General Secretary with which he submitted a number of specific proposals in view of Guterres initiative for the resumption of negotiations for a Cyprus solution.

Deputy Government Spokesperson Panayiotis Sentonas told on Friday CNA that the President “conveys a series of proposals which contribute to the creation of a constructive climate and strengthen the prospects of a Cyprus solution, in view of Guterres` initiative for the resumption of negotiations and in response to his appeal to this extent.”

Guterres in his Good Offices Mission report to the Security Council said regarding the consultations conducted by his special envoy, Jane Hall Lute with all involved, that both the sides and the guarantor powers have expressed a willingness to attend an informal five-plus-one meeting under his auspices.

“The purpose of this meeting will be to determine whether common ground exists for the parties to negotiate a sustainable, lasting solution to the Cyprus problem within a foreseeable horizon. I intend to invite the sides and the guarantor powers to this informal meeting as soon as practicable in 2021,” he said.

Guterres also reiterated that “this time must be different, and this informal five-plus-one meeting will help clarify the true extent of the commonality of vision and outline steps necessary to chart a way forward.”

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. The latest UN backed round of talks took place in 2017, n the Swiss resort of Crans Montana, but failed to yield any results.
