An adult day care centre in Limassol due to be completed by August at a cost of €1.5m, will improve services for the elderly, mayor Nicos Nicolaides said on Friday after visiting the site.

During his visit to the construction site on Filellinon street, Nicolaides said the centre aims to promote the social engagement of elderly people of the area.

The project has been designed by architect Giorgos Demetriou.

Various physical exercise, entertainment and education programmes will operate at the centre, among other activities aiming to include the participation of the elderly in all aspects of social life.

The centre will also host exhibitions, theatrical performances, lectures, and other events for the public, Nicolaides said.

Once completed, it will include a meeting and dining area, reading room, library with computers, administration office, medical support office, a resting area, toilets including those for people with disabilities, kitchen and storage. There will also be an outside covered sitting area with natural ventilation and lighting.

The project is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund of the European Union.

The municipality added that the space where the current Pattichio adult day care centre is hosted within the old Limassol general hospital, is expected to be taken over by the Cyprus university of technology (Tepak).
