Making tracks: travelling Africa’s light rail and tram lines

For both locals and travellers, trams and trains are a pleasurable and efficient transportation option for discovering urban areas – especially those situated in a continent as diverse as Africa.

Dating as far back as the 19th century, by the mid-20th century, many of Africa’s tramway systems were retired as use of the automobile gained popularity. That being said, travelling in the former mode is still a viable option, as this video makes clear.

Showcasing Africa’s modern light rail and tramway systems, the most memorable of which are situated in Algeria, Morocco, Mauritius, Nigeria, Ethiopia and Tunisia, this video also looks ahead at new phases of related developments, to be completed in the near future.
