The defence ministry warned Wednesday that people of certain ages who have not reported for reservist duty, including those who have not provided the necessary documentation justifying their absence, could face sanctions if they do not do so by April 30.

Ministry spokesman, Christos Pieri, said around 5,000 people born between 1971 and 2001 were affected although many could be living or working abroad.

However, he warned that they still had to notify military authorities and provide the necessary documentation.

Pieri said those returning will be eventually found through the police and summoned to report to the army.

Those who report voluntarily by April 30 will not face any legal sanctions, according to Pieri, but those who fail could face a fine of up to €2,000 and or up to one year in prison.

Pieri said the army did not want to initiate legal proceedings against anyone – so far they have not done so – but warned that they would do so this time.

The spokesman warned that people helping skivers could also be held accountable.
