Rialto combines live streaming with physical shows

In the uncertain conditions that have prevailed Rialto Theatre’s cultural agenda will see performances either online via live stream or in the physical presence of audiences at theatre or both.

February’s performances will happen both live online and with the physical presence of an audience following the latest relaxation of the restrictions. However, due to the limitations that remain and most importantly the 9pm curfew, the start time of all performances is set at 7pm. Viewers will be able to purchase tickets either for Live Stream or for the theatre from Rialto’s website:  www.rialto.com.cy

Coming up first, on February 13, is a play in Greek called Lambros which touches upon the fragility of human existence and the absence of free choices in a world where restrictions prevail. Lambros is a young man employed as a false witness in a trial-fixing ring. Everything works just fine until things stop working just fine. The play questions which of our choices are really our own as Lambros’ journey from darkness to light reflects the journey of our own lives.

On February 21 four one-act plays written by Cypriot playwrights take over the stage, presented in the form of staged readings. Four writers – Stephanos Stavrides, Avgi Lilli, Maria A Ioannou and Yiorgos Trillidis – focus on a single subject matter: development in Cyprus. The title of the performances is Develop. Develop Again. Develop Better.

Switching gears from theatre to song, Vakia Stavrou will perform a repertoire of beloved songs from around the globe on February 26 in an evening titled Our souls longing for songs. Vakia will be accompanied by pianist Manolis Neofytou for a charming and hopeful music set.

“In a peculiar era where everything is re-organised and disorganised,” comment the artists, “constantly readjusting and changing, our only lifeline, our hope and light, is found in the songs lasting through the years, those resisting time, those never forgotten. At every concert, our lips still whisper the lyrics, despite the decades that have elapsed. They remind us of our very own childhood and teenage memories, of feasts and celebrations, of days with friends and old love stories.”

The final confirmed performance for Rialto’s February agenda is another evening of music, this one honouring the legacy of Antonis Samarakis and Melina Merkouri inspired by the 100th anniversary of their birth. Music, narration and song will come together on February 28 to combine Samarakis’ writing and Merkouri’s vibrant cultural engagement, bringing out the different critical and alternative voices of the two personalities.
