How magnesium impacts anxiety and depression

This video is meant to expand your general knowledge about living a healthy life and is NOT a substitute for seeking medical advice. Please consult with your doctor before making changes in your health practices, diet and self-care.

In this video, Dr. Eric Berg, a chiropractor specialising in healthy ketosis and Intermittent Fasting, talks about the range of effects that magnesium can have on our mood.

Unfortunately, magnesium deficiency is an extremely common problem, and its symptoms can include:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Low tolerance to stress
  • Insomnia
  • Irritability
  • Brain fog

Conversely, the positive effects magnesium can have on a person’s mood, include:

  • Increased serotonin, which can make us feel calm, happy and stress-free
  • Decreased cortisol, a stress hormone
  • Lower adrenaline, which can help us sleep better
  • Increased GABA – a neurotransmitter involved in relaxation, calmness and sleep
  • Increased melatonin, again promoting better sleep
  • Increased activity in the parasympathetic nervous system, helping to calm us
  • Decreased activity in the sympathetic nervous system, which can hinder sleeping
