Coronavirus: Fracas after false positives at Limassol school (Updated)

Υπουργείο Υγείας – Πρόγραμμα ελέγ

Pupils at Ayios Ioannis high school in Limassol were up in arms on Thursday after mandatory coronavirus rapid tests returned false positives in a number of samples.

The pupils refused to attend class after tests on around 40 samples returned positive results but were later proven to be false.

The chairman of secondary education headteachers Giorgos Iosifides confirmed there had been a number of positive results, which were retested and were found to be negative.

“We were in the same queue, one behind the other,” one female pupil said.

She said it appeared the tests were from different batches.  After the initial result, the testing crew brought a different batch, she said, and everyone tested negative.

The incident sparked a fracas at the school, as pupils started calling their parents and informing teachers of the initial result.

“I am ashamed of being a citizen of the Republic of Cyprus,” another pupil said afterwards.

In protest, pupils refused to go to class while smoke bombs were thrown in the yard.

Police arrived on the scene and order was restored. The pupils clarified that the smoke bombs were not related to the testing debacle but was a Stinky Thursday tradition.

Parents demanded an explanation on the matter, as did the health ministry.
