Normal hair loss versus abnormal hair loss

This video is meant to expand your general knowledge about living a healthy life and is NOT a substitute for seeking medical advice. Please consult with your doctor before making changes in your health practices, diet and self-care.

In this video, Dr. Eric Berg, a chiropractor who specialises in healthy ketosis and Intermittent Fasting, discusses normal hair loss versus pathological hair loss.

A person has hundreds of thousands of hairs growing on their head at any given time. The life cycle of a hair is about 2-5 years. In a normal situation, an average person will lose 50-100 strands of hair every day.

So, if you were to give a patch of your hair a gentle tug, it would be normal to see 1-10 hairs in your hand. But, if you kept running your fingers in the same spot and your hair continued coming out, there could be several reasons why this could be happening.

Potential causes of hair loss:

  • A hormonal change (high estrogen, low progesterone, high DHT, low thyroid, high cortisol)
  • Certain medications
  • Lupus
  • Nutrient deficiencies

Nutrient deficiencies that could potentially cause hair loss:

  • Vitamin D
  • Vitamin B12
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin A
  • Zinc
  • Biotin
  • Selenium
