Symptoms and diagnostic tests to detect low thyroid function (hypothyroidism)

In this video, Dr. Mark Hyman goes over the symptoms of hypothyroidism (low thyroid function) as well as the specific tests needed to secure an accurate diagnosis, in order to heal.

Symptoms of hypothyroidism can include:

  • Trouble losing weight
  • Feeling tired and sluggish and being particularly fatigued in the morning
  • Constipation, dry skin, dry or coarse hair, or hair loss
  • Depression, high cholesterol, low sex drive, fluid retention,
  • Poor memory and trouble concentrating

To check the health of your thyroid, Dr. Hyman recommends you test your levels of:

  • TSH, or thyroid-stimulating hormone
  • Free T4
  • Free T3
  • Thyroid anti-bodies

He also suggests checking for the presence of celiac or gluten anti-bodies and anti-gliadin anti-bodies, as well as heavy metals.
