Snap judgments: how Walter Iooss photographs sport icons

In this video we learn more about the split-second timing and mastery of the shutter, wielded by photographer Walter Iooss.

With half a century’s experience behind the camera, Iooss has photographed some of the world’s biggest sports stars in the largest arenas under the brightest lights. His unrivalled ability to ‘get the shot’ has allowed him access to the inner circle of club houses, team planes and the homes of many athletes, earning him the moniker of ‘poet laureate of sports’.

However, his artistry goes beyond mere access, composition and timing.

“There is a certain way to speak to an athlete,” explains Iooss, describing the lead-up to his iconic images of Michael Jordan, Joe Montana, Kobe Bryant and Muhammad Ali.

Iooss began his career shooting for ‘Sports Illustrated’, having contributed to the magazine for more than 50 years. He has also photographed for the magazine’s ‘Swimsuit Issue’ for four decades.
