The new Covid ward at Paphos general hospital was treating five patients on Tuesday, while it has the capacity for 48 people, including high-dependency patients, according to the state health services (Okypy).

The patients are not in a serious condition, spokesperson Charalambos Charilaou said to the Cyprus News Agency early on Tuesday.

The hospital is part of Okypy’s planning for the development of an additional 300 beds for coronavirus patients to relive the overcrowded Covid wards at other state hospitals.

State healthcare facilities have been under increasing strain as they receive all coronavirus cases in addition to non-covid patients.

Paphos has provided 48 beds, Charilaou said, however only 24 will operate unless there is a need to use the ward at its full capacity. The beds made available were taken from other departments.

To date, the hospital has not faced any problems, he said.
