Magnificent Madagascar: island of natural wonders and epic landscapes

In this video, we head to Madagascar, an island country in the Indian Ocean, approximately 400km off the coast of East Africa… and a true dream destination for outdoors enthusiasts.

Best known for its lemurs, Madagascar is also home to many more weird and wonderful creatures and plants. Unfortunately, much of this biodiversity is under threat from climate change and population pressure, giving each trip a sense of urgency, but also purpose: practised with appropriate care and reverence, tourism here can truly be a force for good.

As for its landscapes, Madagascar’s vistas are enchanting, including: emerald rainforests, baobab trees like giant windmills towering over the savannah, and striking outcrops of limestone pinnacles. In the highlands, there are terraced rice fields, framed by levees of red earth and water-filled nursery paddies reflecting clear blue skies, granite mountains and rows of multi-coloured Hauts Plateaux houses.

On the east coast, travellers will find golden beaches framed by huge boulders and palm trees, and lapped by the Indian Ocean. While out to the west and south, rolling plains of dry savannah and range lands are carved by the country’s broad, meandering rivers.

Should you visit Madagascar, consider the following sites and activities for your itinerary:

  • Wander through the capital, Antananarivo
  • Exploring Parc National Isalo
  • Exploring Parc National Marojejy
