A German Life returns to Nicosia stage

german life

It’s been a whole year since Christopher Hampton’s play had its premiere in Cyprus and this April A German Life returns to Nicosia’s stage. Performed by Despoina Mbembedeli, the acclaimed Greek actress will return to Cyprus for the final six shows at Satiriko Theatre.

The play is based on the life and testimony of Brunhilde Pomsel, a secretary in Berlin in the 1930s. Her last employer was Joseph Gebells, a Nazi German politician and Reich Minister of Propaganda of Nazi Germany from 1933 to 1945. Hampton’s play, which is directed by Andreas Araouzos in its Greek-language adaption, is based on the testimony given by Pomsel when she finally broke her silence to a group of Austrian filmmakers in 2016, shortly before her death at the age of 106.

“I had no idea what was happening,” she had told them. “Or very little. Nothing more than anybody else. So, you can’t make me feel guilty.” The play will resume next week.
