Seeing stars: Frank Stella’s sculptures blaze with decades-long innovation

Frank Stella, the 84-year-old American painter, printmaker and sculptor, has been described as being to abstract art what Bob Dylan is to music.

In this video, we take a closer look at the artist’s giant star sculptures, presently on display at the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Connecticut, in an exhibition titled ‘Frank Stella’s Stars, a Survey’.

Immediately identifiable, the star stands out amidst the tangle of invented abstractions that Stella has explored over his long career. Under the spotlight for the first time, the exhibition presents his use of the star through 25 works that orbit the Museum – ranging from two-dimensional sculptures from the 1960s, to his most recent expression of the star form in sculptures, wall reliefs and painted objects from the 2010s.
