Police on Tuesday said they arrested three men and one woman during an operation on Monday evening in the buffer zone between Lymbia and Athienou where migrants were seen arriving from the north.

During the operation, police officers saw a number of people crossing on foot from the north and boarding two vehicles.

They followed the vehicles and stopped them for a check. Inside, there were 11 people in total.

In the first car, driven by a 28-year-old man, there were six people from Afghanistan (three men, one woman and two children) who had arrived in the north a few days ago.

Riding in the second car, driven by a 25-year-old man, was a man from Pakistan who had arrived in the north recently as well as a 31-year-old woman and a 35-year-old man.

Police secured testimonies against the two car drivers, and the 31-year-old woman. The 35-year-old is believed to be the person who escorted the migrants to the government-controlled areas.

All four of them were arrested and are being investigated for offences concerning harbouring irregular migrants and assisting people enter the country illegally.

The other people found in the cars, were taken to the migrant reception centre in Kokkinotrimithia.
