How to pick up a rabbit without causing them distress

Every pet deserves a loving and respectful home: please only consider acquiring a pet if you will be able to take care of its long-term needs. Also, consider choosing your animal companion from a shelter, where there are so many wonderful furry friends who need a forever home.

As you probably already know if you have a pet rabbit in your family, bunnies get stressed very easily. It takes them time to feel safe and secure in any environment, and being picked up is certainly an activity that could distress them, however bonded they may feel to you.

Yet, some circumstances, such as keeping them safe from danger, or taking them for a vet visit, may require you to lift them into your arms and perhaps into or out of a carrying case. It would be nice to achieve this without causing your bunny to feel threatened or afraid.

Fortunately, in this video, veterinary technician Angela Doss and exotic and wildlife expert David Kleven, go over the right sequence of moves before scooping up your rabbit pal.
