The health ministry announced one death and 889 new cases of Covid-19 on Friday from 66,634 PCR and rapid tests, a positivity rate of 1.33 per cent.

The death concerns an 85-year-old man who was not a vaccinated.

The ministry no longer gives information on whether those who died had underlying conditions.

A source within the ministry said that they were following the recommendations of their adviser on the psychological and social aspect of the pandemic, according to which, revealing whether people had an underlying condition does not in essence offer any additional value.

This, the source said, is because on the one hand underlying diseases can range from high blood pressure to stage four cancer and on the other hand, it “degrades the importance of death and loss of life”, because in people’s minds, it has been linked with the attitude that “they were sick so they would die anyway.”
There are 297 people in hospitals of whom 70 are in a serious condition. Of these, 32 are intubated.

The new cases concern 128 people who were detected through contact tracing, 193 people who got tested privately, and eight cases detected during processing of samples in state hospitals’ lab tests.

One case was detected during testing at the Larnaca and Paphos airports.

Thirty cases were people who got rapid tests in private labs and another 529 concern positive cases found during the rapid testing carried out in all districts on behalf of the health ministry.

Of these, 40 were found during tests in secondary education, one in special schools, three among athletes, 17 in private businesses, one in a nursing home in Nicosia and one during tests at the Aradippou industrial area. The rest concern 197 positive cases detected in the Nicosia district with a positivity rate of 1.11 per cent, 136 in Limassol (1.23 per cent), 92 in Larnaca (1.53 per cent), 29 in Paphos (0.95 per cent) and 12 in the Famagusta district (0.50 per cent).
