Coronavirus: Hospital admissions stabilise

The number of patients treated in hospital for Covid appears to have stabilised despite still being high, the government health services organisation (Okypy) said on Thursday.

On Wednesday, 246 people were being treated, 67 in serious or critical condition either in an ICU or a high dependency unit (HDU).

Okypy spokesman Charalambos Charilaou said figures, including in the ICU, appeared to have stabilised, as he expressed hope that they would drop in the next days.

The situation is manageable, he said, with Okypy implementing its action plans.

Charilaou said however, that the mean age of hospitalised patients has dropped by around 10 years, to 58.6 per cent, compared with the previous wave in January-February.

The Okypy spokesman attributed this to the high number of elderly people who have been vaccinated.

Charilaou renewed the organisation’s appeal for people found positive and who were self-isolating at home, to report any symptoms to their GP and check into a hospital for evaluation as soon as possible if necessary.

He said some people delay going to hospital and end up needing admission in an HDU.
