Coronavirus: One death, 167 new cases

The health ministry announced one death from Covid-19 and 167 new cases on Tuesday, a positivity rate of 0.37 per cent.

The results were from 45,598 tests.

There are currently 148 patients in hospital of whom 49 are in serious condition.

The death was of a 67-year-old man.

The health ministry no longer announces the deceased’s vaccination history or whether they suffered from underlying health conditions.

On Tuesday a total of 45,598 tests were carried out, of which 5,194 were PCR tests.

Tests picked up the following positives: 24 from 257 contact tracing tests, four positives from 2,096 airport tests, 36 from 2,425 tests taken privately, ten from 308 hospital tests and one from 108 tests taken after their GP’s referral.

A further four positives were identified out of 811 rapid tests taken privately – at pharmacies, for example.

The government’s screening programme picked up 88 positives from 39,593 free rapid tests.

The positivity rate per district continues to fluctuate, but Paphos’ has remained stable and extremely low; with just one positive from 3,573 tests – a rate of 0.003 per cent.

Limassol had the highest rate at 0.47 per cent with 39 positives from 8,298 tests, followed by Larnaca’s 0.38 per cent with 15 positives from 3,984 tests, Nicosia’s 0.18 per cent with 22 positives from 12,287 tests and finally, Famagusta’s 0.17 per cent with four positives from 2,369 tests.

One person at a care home tested positive.

In the education sector meanwhile, three positives were recorded from the 7,332 tests.

Total deaths from Covid-19 in the Republic now tally at 348 while cases have reached 71,398.
