How one of Egypt’s last dye houses keeps an ancient textile craft alive

Salama Salem has been running his traditional dye house in Egypt since 1975.

“My job goes back to the pharaohs,” he says of his labours, running Uncle Salama’s Dye House, a job he settled on after trying a handful of other professions – including a nine-year stint in the army.

Today, despite falling demand for his wares due to industrial competition and the Covid-19 pandemic, Salem remains committed to his work, determined to keep the artisanal element of the dying craft, going.
