How a street game became competitive Double Dutch

Hey kids, in this video we look back at the history of the popular youth game ‘Double Dutch’, in which two long jump ropes, turning in opposite directions, are jumped by one or more players, leaping simultaneously.

As we learn, the street game was particularly popular with African American girls in New York City, who would alternate between Double Dutch and playing hopscotch with friends in their neighbourhood.

Then, in 1973, Double Dutch was developed into a competitive team sport and, ever since has spread in its athletic and youth-appeal, leading to hotly-contested city and national championships.
