Bourse de Commerce-Pinault Collection: Paris’ newest temple of art opens its doors

French billionaire François Pinault, 84, founder of the company that eventually became the luxury-goods group Kering, is an art collector of international renown. And now, thanks to him, Paris’ culture scene has gained a ravishing new contemporary art museum.

The city’s latest palace of art is located within the French capital’s former Bourse de Commerce (Stock Exchange), redesigned and painstakingly restored to its 19th-century glory by star architect Tadao Andō, over a period of three years, and costing some €150 million to complete.

The Bourse de Commerce-Pinault Collection‘s inaugural exhibition ‘Ouverture’ is the first in what will be a series of rotating shows and installations, drawn primarily from Pinault’s art collection. It features 200 works from over 30 artists, and makes use of all 10 exhibition spaces, from the building’s exterior to its interior.

In terms of his overall collection, Pinault’s around 10,000 pieces include modernist masterworks by Mondrian and Rothko, alongside a heavy concentration of works by contemporary art stars such as Jeff Koons, Urs Fischer, and Cindy Sherman, as well as paintings, photographs, videos, sculptures and installations by younger and emerging artists from around the world.
