Future health: the five stages to fully-automated healthcare

In this video, Dr. Bertalan Mesko, host of The Medical Futurist YouTube channel, discusses the five stages envisioned before full automation of healthcare can take place, as well as the technology-driven scenarios that are already unfolding in hospitals across the world.

With the impact of Artificial Intelligence escalating across all disciplines, the medical profession offers a particularly fertile ground for A.I.-powered innovation.

Yet while the stages, as outlined by Dr. Mesko, may seem an uncomfortable ceding of power from a human physician to an A.I., full automation – in which an A.I. safely takes full charge of a patient’s diagnosis and treatment, without being overseen by a flesh-and-blood doctor – seems unlikely in the short term.

What does seem clear from his point of view, however, is that the use of A.I. assistants to partner human doctors – for example by crosschecking, flagging and tracking patient data – will become tomorrow’s norm.
