Sleep expert busts common myths about the land of nod

This video is meant to expand your general knowledge about living a healthy life and is NOT a substitute for seeking medical advice. Please consult with your doctor before making changes in your health practices, diet and self-care.

In this video, neuroscientist Professor Matthew Walker debunks prevalent myths about sleep and its impact and role in maintaining good health – drawing on the research he compiled in his 2017 book, ‘Why we Sleep’.

Sleep is one of the most important aspects of our life, health and longevity, and yet it is increasingly neglected in 21st-century society, with devastating consequences; every major disease in the developed world – Alzheimer’s, cancer, obesity, diabetes – has very strong causal links to deficient sleep.

In ‘Why We Sleep’, Professor Walker sifts through 20 years of cutting-edge research, delving into everything from what really happens during REM sleep, to how caffeine and alcohol affect sleep, and why our sleep patterns change across a lifetime.
