Drivers arrested for drink driving, speeding

Two drivers were arrested for traffic violations, specifically drink driving and speeding, Larnaca police said on Wednesday.

The first driver, aged 36, was arrested around 3.20pm on Tuesday after he tested positive in an alcohol test in Apostolos Pavlos square. He was taken to the offices of the district’s traffic police where he tested 117mg instead of the maximum 22mg.

The second driver, 22, was found speeding at 208km per hour on the Nicosia – Larnaca motorway, where the maximum speed limit is at 100km per hour.

“Driving under the influence of alcohol and speeding are two of the main causes of serious and fatal road collisions,” police said.

About one in three fatal collisions in Cyprus in the last five years has been caused by one of these two serious traffic offenses, it was added.
