How local fishers are helping to revive a Jamaican bay

Over the years, fishers in Oracabessa Bay, Jamaica, have had to venture increasingly further out to sea to find fish. During such trips, they would come upon bleached and dying corals, on which many fish depend.

So, in order to revitalise their marine environment, the fishers partnered with the GoldenEye Foundation, whose mission is to improve the Oracabessa community’s quality of life, and launched the Oracabessa Bay Marine Trust.

Thanks to the Trust, today the fishers are being trained to become divers and to manage restoration programmes. The Trust also patrols the water to combat destructive fishing practices.
