Coronavirus: 787 new cases, one death (Updated)

One death and a surge in the number of new coronavirus cases to 787 were announced on Monday.

The new cases were reported from 43,678 PCR and rapid tests, a positivity rate of 1.80 per cent.

The death was a 69-year-old woman who was not considered an active case because 21 days had passed since she was first tested positive. She had recently been moved out of the ICU at the Nicosia general hospital to the American Medical Center.

The death toll now stands at 380, of whom 254 were men and 126 women with an average age of 77.3.

There are 88 coronavirus patients in hospitals, 23 of whom are in serious condition. Of the 23 patients, nine are intubated, four are in ICU and 10 in the High Dependency Unit.

Of the 43,678 tests, 6,613 were PCR and 37,065 rapid tests.

The majority, 583 of the 787 cases came from rapid testing performed at health ministry testing sites, with 32 more cases found out of 621 rapid tests performed at private labs and pharmacies.

Ninety-nine cases came from 2,364 samples taken through private initiative, while 501 samples taken from contacts of already confirmed cases yielded 28 positives.

Thirty-seven positives came from 344 samples processed by hospital labs, while seven samples taken through GP referrals yielded two positives.

In addition, 3,397 samples were taken at airports with six positives.

Rapid testing detected 172 cases in Nicosia (1.23 per cent positivity rate), 188 in Limassol (2.17 per cent positivity rate), 85 in Larnaca (1.69 per cent positivity rate), 61 in Paphos (1.71 per cent positivity rate and 55 in Famagusta (1.80 per cent positivity rate).
