Arrest after police find weapons, illegal game and duty free tobacco

A 50-year-old man was arrested late on Thursday after officers found weapons, illegally killed birds, drugs and duty-free tobacco products in his home in the Famagusta district.

The search was carried out as part of a police operation in the district, during which officers using a warrant checked two houses owned by the suspect.

The operation was carried out by members from the drug squad and Game and Fauna officers and police dogs.

One pistol, 161 cartridges, a shotgun with a severed barrel, two grams of cannabis, a large number of explosives such as flares, firecrackers and smoke canisters, and 3510 packets of cigarettes for which duty had not been paid, were seized.

Police also found and confiscated ten wild bird trapping nets and three machines mimicking wild bird sounds, 20 frozen wild birds, six live hares, a nozzle device and a pair of handcuffs.

The 50-year-old is expected to appear in Famagusta district court in Paralimni to be remanded.
