Jazzy nights in Nicosia this weekend

july 10 jazz jens thekkeveettil

For some good ol’ jazz tunes in the capital city, there is one place the lovers of the genre can always count on and that’s Sarah’s Jazz Club. Since its post-lockdown reopening, founder Sarah Fenwick and her team have been organising weekly lives with some of the island’s most acclaimed musicians invited to perform. This July, more gigs and jam sessions are scheduled.

Coming up on Saturday July 10 is a special performance called Jazz the Beatles as the evening will be dedicated to beautiful songs composed by the famous four. With Sarah Fenwick on vocals and Alexis Kasinos on guitar, two of Cyprus’ accomplished and improvisational musicians, audiences will enjoy classic tunes like Eleanor Rigby, Hey Jude, Dear Prudence and Can’t Buy Me Love. Doors open at 8pm and live music will begin at 9pm until the venue closes at around 1am.

Next week look out for something spontaneous and unplanned at the Jazz Club as The Charis Ioannou Trio jam session takes over on Wednesday, July 14. Charis Ioannou on the saxophone, Christos Yerolatsitis on the piano, Irenaeos Koulouras on bass and Marios Spyrou on drums will join for another one of their famous jam sessions, improvising together.

Currently last on the jazz club’s agenda for July is a performance by the Ioanna Troullidou Quartet on Wednesday, July 21, although something tells me more gigs will follow. During their live music set, Ioanna Troullidou, Marios Toumbas, Irenaeos Koullouras and Stelios Xydas will perform various songs from the different decades of Jazz music. From the Jazz standards to bebop Jazz composition, as well as some original songs composed by Ioanna.
