TV shows we love: Sweet Tooth

If you thought coronavirus restrictions were irrational, wait to see what they do to people who test positive during The Great Crumble. But this is only part of the story in Sweet Tooth, where seemingly unrelated narratives are tied together in a perfect knot.

In one of the narratives – which still remains science-fiction – are hybrid babies, and Gus, an adorable ‘human’ boy who is partly deer.

While I sympathise with a certain degree of hesitation about watching a show about a global pandemic right now, no one must miss out on this heart-breaking yet heart-warming tale.

It might seem too close to home, but the text locks viewers in a glass box, allowing them to watch and empathise with the protagonists but also feel the safety of the ‘fairytale’ elements that is fiction.

Plus, Gus’ positivity surely rubs onto you. His refreshing life view, optimistic attitude and persistence against all odds are an ideal reminder of what is important.

Sweet Tooth can be interpreted in multiple ways. It is also a story about family and the never-ending struggle of seeking somewhere to belong; not a physical place but finding ‘your people’ -whatever that means. It is also a story about responsibility and the burden of personal choices, bringing in stories of grief and loss before moving on to the next chapter rapidly (which might include some cool fight scenes).

It also raises some important questions like: Is a global pandemic nature’s way of survival or a human made disaster?

Filmed in New Zealand, the script, which was adapted from a comic book strip under the same name, could have also made an excellent movie. But co-creator Jim Mickle decided to give audiences an experience closer to the books, in eight hour-long episodes.

Surely, there is enough material to create a second season, but official confirmation has not yet been made public about the return of Gus and his human-animal friends.
