People of Famagusta call on workers to down tools for five minutes on Tuesday

The Famagusta Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCCI) on Friday called on workers to hold a five-minute stoppage on Tuesday morning in protest over Turkey’s actions in the fenced area of Varosha.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who will be in the north to participate in celebrations on July 20 for the 47th anniversary since the invasion of Cyprus, is expected to make announcements on Varosha.

The Famagusta CCCI on Friday called for the five-minute work stoppage “in protest of Erdogan’s actions in the fenced city of Famagusta.”

It called on all workers throughout the island to stand outside their workplaces on Tuesday at 10am for five minutes.

“Let us show the world our aversion to Erdogan’s illegal plans that lead with mathematical precision to the final partition of Cyprus and the transfer of the border with Turkey to Tylliria, Nicosia and Dheryneia,” the Chamber said.

It also called on people to join in the event organised for Monday by the Famagusta municipality ahead of Erdogan’s visit. The event will take place at 7pm at the municipality’s cultural centre in Dherynia.

It stressed that this event concerns all Cypriots and not only the people of Famagusta “because simply if Famagusta is lost, the whole of Cyprus will also be lost.”
