Coronavirus: Five deaths including man aged 36, 1056 new cases (Updated)

Five deaths from Covid-19 and 1,056 new cases were reported on Monday out of 69, 464 PCR and rapid tests, a positivity rate of 1.52 per cent.

The deaths were four men, aged 35, 66, 77 and 88. One woman, aged 92, also died. Of the 390 deaths from the virus, 67 per cent have been men (260) and the average age is 77. The health ministry no longer states whether the deceased had underlying health conditions or their vaccination history.

The health ministry said 228 people were in hospital with the virus, of whom 56 are in serious condition. It was highlighted that 91.2 per cent of those in hospital are unvaccinated.

The total number of positive cases recorded as of Monday now totals 92,252.

As for Monday’s tests, there were 7,483 PCR tests and 61,981 rapid tests.

The PCR tests identified 27 positives from 223 contact tracing tests with a further 21 from 3,306 airport tests.

Of the 3,451 PCR tests taken privately there were 253 positives, while the 388 tests taken at hospitals yielded 37 positives. Tests taken upon the advice of GPs numbered 115 and returned two positives.

As for the rapid tests: 2,054 which were taken privately returned 82 positives while the government’s free screening programme – totalling 59,927 tests – identified 634 positives.

The breakdown per district for the free rapid tests is as follows: Larnaca had the highest positivity rate with 1.44 per cent (146 positives from 10,108 tests), followed by Limassol’s 1.18 positivity rate (162 positives from 13,680 tests), Famagusta’s 0.95 per cent (44 positives from 4,630 tests), Nicosia’s 0.94 per cent (218 positives from 23,204 tests) and, finally, Paphos’ 0.89 per cent (58 positives from 6,487 tests).
