Τurkey to terminate provocative actions for prospects of UN talks’ resumption, government says

Τhe prerequisite for the creation of prospects for a resumption of the UN talks on the Cyprus problem is for Turkey to end its provocative actions that violate Cyprus` sovereign rights, the government said on Sunday.

Deputy Government Spokesman Niovi Parisinou speaking at a memorial service for the heroes of Dromolaxia-Meneou towns, said that Turkey’s provocations and threatening actions are not to the right direction and call on both Ankara and the Turkish Cypriot community to realise that the solution is possible only via mutual respect and compromises.

She also said that Turkey needs to respect the international law as regards the missing persons issue.

Parisinou reassured that the president was working hard, doing the utmost for a just and viable solution. Anastasiades has shown his determination and will to sit at the negotiating table for a solution that will answer the people’s expectations, will reunite the island on the basis of the UN resolutions and the EU acquis, without foreign guarantors and army forces, she added.

She also said that the aim is for Cyprus to evolve into a real sovereign and free country where all its legal residents, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots will live in peace and stability.

Turkish Cypriot leader, Ersin Tatar, announced on Tuesday a partial lifting of the military status in Varosha.

UN Security Council resolution 550 (1984) considers any attempts to settle any part of Varosha by people other than its inhabitants as inadmissible and calls for the transfer of this area to the administration of the UN. UN Security Council resolution 789 (1992) also urges that with a view to the implementation of resolution 550 (1984), the area at present under the control of the United Nations Peace-keeping Force in Cyprus be extended to include Varosha.

On October 8, 2020, the Turkish side opened part of the fenced area of Varosha, following an announcement made in Ankara on October 6. Both the UN Secretary-General and the EU expressed concern, while the UN Security Council called for the reversal of this course of action.
